WHO released ICD-11 2026 on 16 February 2026. The release highlights refined clinical content, expanded extension codes, new data-quality tools and integration with modern health systems through structured definitions and APIs.

Why the 2026 release matters

ICD-11 was designed for the digital era. WHO describes it as a global standard for recording, reporting and analysing health information. The 2026 release extends that digital-first approach and emphasises precise documentation, interoperability and data quality.

The mental health manual is now part of a larger digital system

WHO published the Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements for mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders in 2024. The CDDR supports clinical diagnosis while the broader ICD-11 infrastructure supports coding, reporting and health-system use.

What PHCF can learn from ICD-11

The lesson is architectural. A modern classification framework should not exist only as a book. Stable releases matter, but so do searchable definitions, version history, structured digital content, interoperable terms and transparent updates.

That is why the PHCF website is being designed as a reference system rather than a promotional landing page. The manual can remain the stable scholarly object while the web version supports navigation, updates and research use.

PHCF is not an ICD extension

PHCF has no WHO status and should not be presented as part of ICD-11. Its role is independent and developmental. Its proposed contribution is a structured account of positive mental health that could be examined alongside established classification, functioning and formulation systems.
