The future DSM - what is actually known about “DSM-6”?

People will search for DSM-6. APA's 2026 language is more careful. It is developing the next iteration of the DSM through a formal future-DSM strategy, with substantial changes under discussion.

DSM / APAFuture DSMClassification futures

In January 2026, the American Psychiatric Association released a roadmap for the future of the DSM. The emerging direction is not simply a new numbered edition. APA's own materials describe a broader, more flexible and more scientifically integrated model.

Has DSM-6 been announced?

Not in the simple sense implied by the label “DSM-6”. APA established the Future DSM Strategic Committee in 2024 and published its strategic roadmap in 2026. APA reporting later referred to the next iteration as the Diagnostic and Scientific Manual of Mental Disorders. The safest description is therefore the future or next DSM unless APA formally specifies the final edition name.

What may change?

APA's roadmap describes a possible structure that gives more explicit space to contextual factors, biomarkers and biological factors, diagnoses with varying specificity and severity, and transdiagnostic features. Other committee work addresses socioeconomic, cultural and environmental determinants, functioning and quality of life.

The important shift is not merely whether categories change. It is whether psychiatric classification becomes capable of representing more of the clinical picture around those categories.

Why the development matters to PHCF

PHCF is not a proposal for replacing DSM. The relevance lies in the direction of travel. If future diagnostic systems increasingly incorporate context, functioning, quality of life and dimensional information, the question of how positive mental health should be represented becomes more important, not less.

PHCF makes a narrower proposition. Positive health may require its own structured classification rather than being inferred from symptom absence, functioning or quality of life. That proposition remains to be tested.

What should researchers watch?

The most important developments will be the final architecture chosen by APA, the role of dimensional and transdiagnostic information, the handling of functioning and quality of life, and the extent to which contextual and environmental determinants become part of routine diagnostic assessment.

No. As of 13 September 2026, APA is publicly discussing the future or next DSM and has released a strategic roadmap. The page uses “DSM-6” because it is a common search term, not because APA has formally released a manual under that title.
The roadmap discusses greater dimensionality and transdiagnostic information, but the final structure is still evolving. It would be premature to state that conventional diagnoses will disappear.
No. PHCF is an independent developmental framework. The comparison is conceptual and research-oriented.
